There are many myths and misconceptions about phenolic panels and it is important to know that all phenolic products and all phenolic fabricators are not created equally. Manufacturers recommend specific storage, machining and fastening methods to ensure the panels retain their look and function throughout their intended life cycle. It takes talent, technology and years of experience to master the level of craftsmanship necessary to achieve optimum results when fabricating phenolic products.

Myth: Phenolic resin panels are plastic, solid surface or even a wood product.

Fact: Interestingly, phenolic panels start as paper. Melamine-impregnated decorative surface papers are layered with phenolic resin treated kraft papers (quite similar to that of a paper grocery bag) and pressed at a very high pressure and temperature to create the durable homogeneous panels we use in fabrication. The decorative surface paper gives the panel its surface color and the melamine overlay helps create the scratch resistant surface. The kraft papers are dyed per the desired core option and as more kraft papers are added, an increased panel thickness is achieved.

Myth: All phenolic panels come with a black core.

Fact: With innovative technology and creative processing, panel manufacturers are now able to offer a variety of solid phenolic core options including: brown or natural core, Natura or color-core, a pin-striped core and layered cores. Spec-Rite is pleased to offer all of these core options on any of our product lines for a unique and customized solution.
